My new Instagram friend took me to dark and unknown places one day. He lured me in to stinking alleys the very first time we met. I’m not sure which of us were the most brave… But he must have guessed I would love it!
He showed me a couple of secret streets, so secret that most Florentines don’t know about them. He himself had looked for years for them and finally found them. And now, with his permission of course, I will share one of them with you.
If you dare follow me into the dark?

Actually, it’s not that dangerous. Just wanted to awaken you sense of adventure! OK, if you walk via del Corso, one of the shopping and hotel streets south of Duomo, you come to this tiny door. It is the front of the door in the first photo. And that is the entrance to the secret passway.

My friend told me stories about the families that used to live here hundreds of years ago, why the houses were built so close, and why these alleys, that have never been visible on city maps, were needed. I do hope we can do this walk again another time, at a slower pace so I have a chance to listen carefully and memorise đ

The Florentine lily. Always present.

The alley curves and winds its way through the block, and needless to say one looses all sense of direction in there. Where will we get out? Will we get out?

Suddenly a gate presents itself.

And we are out in the street again. Question is which street? Feels like it could be anywhere.
It’s Via Dante Alighieri.
Now when you get to Florence, grab a Florentine by the hand and show them one of their city’s secrets!
